In the midst of the intense focus on the conflict in Gaza, it's crucial not to overlook the alarming situation in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Over the past two weeks, at least 76 Palestinians have lost their lives in clashes with Israeli forces. This is part of a broader escalation of violence, with tensions mounting across the occupied territories.
The recent surge in violence stems from an unexpected attack by Hamas, the governing body in Gaza, on Israeli territory on October 7. Since then, Israel has responded with force, resulting in over 1,400 casualties in Israel. Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, where over three million Palestinians reside, the situation has grown increasingly dire. Residents face daily raids, with an average of five Palestinians losing their lives each day since October 7. The toll on human lives and injuries is devastating.
Innocent lives are being lost. Just between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, Israeli forces and settlers claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals, including four children. One heart-wrenching incident involved 15-year-old Taha Mahameed and 17-year-old Ahmad Muneer Sdooq, who lost their lives in separate refugee camps. Moreover, over 1,300 people have been injured in the ongoing clashes.
The response from Israeli forces has been accompanied by mass arrests. In the past 13 days, at least 850 Palestinians have been detained in raids across the occupied territories, with an additional 120 arrested overnight on Wednesday. This includes hundreds of Gazan laborers apprehended inside Israel. These events have triggered protests and confrontations against both the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israeli forces.
The Palestinian Authority, created under the 1993 Oslo Accords, has faced significant criticism. Many Palestinians view it as a subcontractor for the Israeli occupation, given its policy of "security coordination" with Israel. This unpopular stance has fueled calls for change, with protesters demanding a shift in leadership.
As the conflict continues, the toll on lives and communities is staggering. The international community must remain engaged and committed to finding a lasting solution that ensures the safety and well-being of all those affected by this devastating violence.
