Artificial Intelligence is undeniably transforming the military landscape, bringing both opportunities and challenges. As AI continues to advance, it is crucial for governments, military leaders, and the international community to address the ethical, legal, and strategic implications of its use in warfare. The decisions made today will shape the future of conflict, and it is imperative to ensure that AI is used in ways that promote security, stability, and, above all, humanity.
Artificial intelligence (AI), is a technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities. The ideal characteristic of artificial intelligence is its ability to rationalize and take action to achieve a specific goal. AI research began in the 1950s and was used in the 1960s by the United States Department of Defense when it trained computers to mimic human reasoning. AI can perform tasks that would otherwise require human intelligence or intervention on its own or combined with other technologies (e.g., sensors, geolocation, robotics). Digital assistants, GPS guidance, autonomous vehicles, and generative AI tools such as Open AI's Chat GPT, are just a few examples of AI in the daily news and our daily lives.
It is widely believed that we are on the brink of another military revolution. Today, countries actively seek to harness AI's power for military advantage. Armed forces have employed AI to help automate weapons, process data, and augment military intelligence. Above all, the armed forces have harnessed AI to accelerate and improve military targeting. AI can benefit the military in numerous ways including Warfare systems, Combat Simulation, Target Recognition, Threat Monitoring, Cyber Security, Transportation, Casualty Care, and Evacuation.
Warfare systems such as weapons, sensors, navigation, aviation support, and surveillance can employ AI to make operations more efficient and less reliant on human input. This additional efficiency means that these systems may require less maintenance and also reduce the need for full human control of warfare systems.
Artificial intelligence aids in making target recognition more accurate in combat environments. It can improve the ability of systems to identify the positions of their targets. This allows defence forces to acquire a detailed understanding of an operation area by examining reports, documents, news, and other forms of information, aggregating and analyzing these sources much more quickly than humans. This saves time and human resources, putting soldiers a step ahead of their targets, but as always requires humans to make the ultimate decision.
Drones with AI can be used in threat monitoring. These systems use AI to aid defense personnel in monitoring threats, and thus leveraging their situational awareness. They can monitor border areas, recognize threats, and alert response teams. Additionally, they can strengthen the security of military bases, as well as increase the safety of soldiers in combat.
Even highly secure military systems can be vulnerable to cyber-attacks, as a result, AI can be of great help. Attacks can put classified information at risk, as well as damage a system that can endanger military personnel and jeopardize the mission. AI can protect programs, data, networks, and computers from persons not authorized to access them. AI also studies patterns of cyber-attacks and forms protective strategies to fight against them. These systems can recognize the smallest behaviours of malware attacks far before they enter a network.
Soldiers and medics make decisions in high-stress situations, AI aids when a fellow service member may need help. The dangerous environment presents a lot of obstacles to providing medical treatment to the wounded. Some types of AI use algorithms and large medical databases that can access data containing medical trauma cases, which include diagnoses, vital sign sets, medications given, and treatments. It then takes this data, combined with manually entered information to provide indications, warnings, and suggestions for treatment. AI is not qualified to make medical decisions but it can provide rapid analysis to give humans more information on which to base their decisions.
Advanced military software and technologies can provide safety to soldiers, reduce human labour, and improve decision-making. Using AI, humans can delegate dangerous tasks to non-human agents to protect themselves. For example, tactical ground robots can navigate terrains and handle explosives that can potentially harm personnel in combat.
Wars put significant stress on the human body, and soldiers can become fatigued, and this prevents their ability to perform effectively. However, with AI, soldiers can utilize their time and energy better. For instance, rather than driving combat vehicles or flying aircraft, AI can take complete control and allow soldiers to focus their efforts elsewhere, such as analyzing data and prepping for battle. This can significantly reduce the risk of injury and increase the chances of mission success.
This is another benefit of using AI in the military. With automated technology, we can make smarter and safer decisions in combat with little to no mistakes. Drones and AI are utilized to identify and communicate risks or threats that may occur. They can more accurately determine objects in the distance, providing an advantage in preparing for an attack.
On the other hand, Setbacks due to the potential risks and dangers can arise when utilizing this technology. For example, The use of automated technology in the military, particularly military robots, is a topic that triggers ethical concerns. Robots are capable of performing tasks more efficiently and precisely than humans, the human soldiers can likely be replaced with machines. Another disadvantage is Security threats, which is a major concern when using AI. This is because enemies might attempt to hack the AI system. If they are successful in hacking and invading the system, sensitive information can be stolen and exploited to the opposing team's advantage.
Generally, AI has the potential to revolutionize military operations in the world but it is associated with some disadvantages which need to be taken into consideration for effective use of AI. However, the reality is that AI is being implemented in military technologies worldwide, hence nations must be equipped to protect and defend themselves.
